RUN MTURK PARTICIPANTS

Before Launching a HIT

Setting up TurkPrime:

  • Our lab uses TurkPrime, an easy and intuitive web platform for running studies on mTurk. Login info for both TurkPrime and mTurk are stored in our LastPass vault

  • This tutorial explains how to use TurkPrime to set up a study. More useful information can be found on the TurkPrime FAQ page

Coordinating Qualtrics with mTurk

  • To direct mTurkers to a Qualtrics survey, go to your survey on Qualtrics. Under ‘Distributions’, copy the anonymous link. Set this as your survey hyperlink on TurkPrime

  • To ensure that subjects’ mTurk IDs get saved in your Qualtrics data, go to ‘Survey Flow’ in Qualtrics. At the top, add an embedded data element. Click ‘Add a New Field’ and type ‘workerId’. Note: The ‘I’ MUST be capitalized

Coordinating Inquisit with mTurk (and Qualtrics if needed)

  • To direct mTurkers to an Inquisit experiment, log into your Inquisit account and go to ‘Web Scripts’. Copy your experiment’s launch page link. Set this as your survey hyperlink on TurkPrime

  • To ensure that subjects’ mTurk IDs get saved in your Inquisit data, log into your Inquisit account and go to ‘Web Scripts’. Click ‘edit’ and go to the ‘Subject IDs’ page.

    • Set ‘Choose how participant ids should be generated’ to URL Parameter

    • Set the participant id parameter to workerId. Note: The ‘I’ MUST be capitalized

  • To direct mTurkers to Qualtrics after your Inquisit experiment, log into your Inquisit account and go to ‘Web Scripts’. Click ‘edit’ and go to the ‘Finish Page’ page.

    • Select ‘Redirect to an external website’

    • Paste the anonymous link for your Qualtrics survey into the box

Launching a HIT

Paying for your HIT:

  • If you’re a senior lab member, you can add money yourself. If you’re a junior lab member (e.g. undergrad RA), you’ll need to ask a senior lab member to help you with this step

  • On the TurkPrime dashboard, the money needed for both mTurk and TurkPrime will be listed with your study

  • To add money to TurkPrime, click the TurkPrime balance at the top of the page. Add the money needed from our lab’s pcard

  • To add money to mTurk, click the mTurk balance at the top of the page. Log into Amazon and add the money needed from our lab’s pcard

  • Send all receipts to the lab manager

Starting your HIT:

  • Participants usually accumulate quickly! When you first launch your experiment, you may want to request only a small number of participants (e.g. 10) to test for issues.

  • When you’re ready to start your HIT, simply navigate to the dashboard on TurkPrime and press the launch button.

IMPORTANT: Check the lab gmail several times a day while the HIT is running! mTurkers will send complaints here, and you’ll need to address them in a timely manner. Otherwise, you’ll lower our lab’s approval rating, which makes it hard for everyone else to get participants.
